After School Programs

The Special Music School has developed many of its own after school offerings. Academic, music, art and sports programs take place or begin in our building. Not all programs are offered every year. Flyers about the programs are distributed at the beginning of each semester. Each of these programs has a fee.

After School Homework Help Class

SMS is pleased to continue offering this highly successful class to all students, except for Kindergarteners, on Tuesdays (starting at 4:00 pm), Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 3:15 pm - 5:30 pm. Students are supervised while working on and receiving help with their homework. This class also provides a safe place for students to wait if their parents get caught in a situation that deems them unable to arrive at school at 3:00 pm. However, we obviously do not encourage this it is fine on an occasional, emergency basis.

Chamber Music

SMS is pleased to be able to offer chamber music classes to students in Grade 3 and higher for all instruments. Ensemble experience is an important aspect of musical training. Students have the opportunity to play in small groups, get valuable experience in ensemble playing, and explore the wonderful literature of chamber music. There is an inter-grade violin ensemble. Classes take place on Mondays and Thursdays at 3 PM. There is a fee for this program; some financial aid is available through the Kaufman Center.

Piano as a Second Instrument

A class for students who wish to supplement the study of their primary instrument with an introduction to basic keyboard skills. Students learn competency at the piano while enhancing their general musicianship and understanding of theory. Strongly recommended for string and wind players.

Improvisation

For students of all grades and instruments. A small class tailored to student needs offers creative work in improvisation.

Chess Club

Chess is offered once a week for players of all ages and levels. Students learn chess skills, play games, and may enter competitions if they wish.

Junior Jazz Dance

This introduction to dance is geared to children in Grades K-1. It is offered by the Lucy Moses School and meets once a week.

Rollerblading

Kids on Wheels, directed by Joel Rappelfeld, meets weekly at SMS during the fall and spring months. Children of all ages and levels learn essential rollerblading skills, tricks, and team games in nearby playgrounds and parks.

Frozen Ropes

Baseball skills batting, fielding, etc.-- are taught in this weekly clinic, which is held on West 74th St. Parents take turns transporting SMS children to the class.

Lucy Moses School

The Lucy Moses School, also part of the Kaufman Center, offers many high quality after school classes, including dance and music theater. See the Lucy Moses website, pick up a brochure (available in the Goodman House lobby), or call 501-3360.

The After School Committee continues to seek out good opportunities for SMS students and add them to our program. All suggestions are welcome.
